- Authoethnographic approach = a form of self-reflection and writing that the author uses to connect their personal experience to a wider, cultural understanding. Chapter 8 pg 167, New Literacies Sampler

- Meme = a popular term for describing catchy and widely propagated ideas or phenomena. Chapter 9 pg 201, New Literacies Sampler
- Fidelity = qualities of the meme that enable it to be readily copied and passed from mind to mind relatively intact. Chapter 9 pg 201, New Literacies Sampler.
- Fecundity = refers to the rate at which an idea or pattern is copied and spread (in reference to memes). Chapter 9 pg 202, New Literacies Sampler
- Anomalous juxtaposition = incongruous couplings of images used as the "hooks" for a meme. Chapter 9 pg 215, New Literacies Sampler
- L/literacy = "big L" refers to making meaning in ways that are tied directly to life and being in the world. "Small l" descrives the actual processes of reading, writing, viewing, listening, manipulating images and sound, making connections between different ideas and using words and symbols that are part of the big L literacy practices.
