Personal Glossary

Here is my personal collection of new terms I learned or clarified throughout this course.

1.  Fluid IQ = basic method of intelligence. Video, "The Millenials"
2. New literacies = video games, fan fiction writing, weblogging, and/or social practices involving mobile computing. Chapter 1 pg 1, New Literacies Sampler
3. Discourses = socially recognized ways of using language so that we can be identified and recognized as being a member of a socially meaningful group. 
4. Semiotics = images, sounds, graphics, signs, codes. Chapter 1 pg 3, New Literacies Sampler
5. Web 2.0 = This mindset is focused on services and enabling users rather than providing products. Chapter 1 pg 17, New Literacies Sampler
6. Monochronic = treating time as linear, tangible, and divisible. Chapter 2 pg 27, New Literacies Sampler
7. Polychronic = seeing time as more fluid, layered, and simultaneous. Chapter 2 pg 27, New Literacies Sampler
8. Canonical = authorized, recognized, accepted (in reference to texts). Chapter 2 pg 33, New Literacies Sampler. Definition from dictionary.com 
9. Projective stance = a double-sided stance towards the world (virtual or real). Chapter 5 pg 95, New Literacies Sampler
10. Affinity spaces = people interact and relate to each other around a common passion, proclivity, or endeavor. Chapter 6 pg 117, New Literacies Sampler
11. OMG Standard = a review structure where readers give 'sweet' responses to the author. Chapter 6 pg 124, New Literacies Sampler
12. Godmodding = Fanfiction author, Tiana, used this ability when writing fanfiction to delete illogical lines that do not cohere with the story's plot. Chapter 6 pg 144, New Literacies Sampler 
13. Authoethnographic approach = a form of self-reflection and writing that the author uses to connect their personal experience to a wider, cultural understanding. Chapter 8 pg 167, New Literacies Sampler
14. Hypertext = text displayed electronically that links to another cite. Chapter 8 pg 168, New Literacies Sampler
15. Insider Research = research of and by people who are immersed in the use of new media. Chapter 8 pg 173, New Literacies Sampler
16. Meme = a popular term for describing catchy and widely propagated ideas or phenomena. Chapter 9 pg 201, New Literacies Sampler
17. Fidelity = qualities of the meme that enable it to be readily copied and passed from mind to mind relatively intact. Chapter 9 pg 201, New Literacies Sampler.
18. Fecundity = refers to the rate at which an idea or pattern is copied and spread (in reference to memes). Chapter 9 pg 202, New Literacies Sampler
19. Anomalous juxtaposition = incongruous couplings of images used as the "hooks" for a meme. Chapter 9 pg 215, New Literacies Sampler
20. L/literacy = "big L" refers to making meaning in ways that are tied directly to life and being in the world. "Small l" descrives the actual processes of reading, writing, viewing, listening, manipulating images and sound, making connections between different ideas and using words and symbols that are part of the big L literacy practices.
