I enjoyed reading Chapter 6 about online learning with fan fiction. I didn't realize this was such a huge online community (social affinity). I agree with the author that educators could incorporate these new information and communication technologies. Students would be able to write authentically with a topic they care about and are interested in. In addition, the ability for users to comment and give critiques and positive comments fosters a safe environment where the author feels secure to share their stories, even if they aren't one hundred percent grammatically correct. Using an online environment for writing would also promote social diversity and give the students a place to meet and connect with other students they might not get the chance to meet otherwise.

Lara, I agree that older students would love to use this new technology. This would be a good way for students to share their opinions in a safe way and to connect to people that they would not normally meet. I was not aware of the fan fiction genre until I read this chapter. I don't think this genre would be easy to use with my 8 year old's, but this would be perfect for middle and high school students.
ReplyDeleteLara,
ReplyDeleteNow that I have learned a little more about fan fiction, I am very interested in it. I reminds me of the twists that have been written for fairy tales and etc. The students always love to hear different versions of stories. I think this would be a great asset when teaching writing especially when a writer gets a writer's block. They could go on here and read and get new ideas.
You are right Lara, as educators we can incorporate this new information and communication technologies. Allowing them to write authentically about something they are interested in and care about. We have to keep students interest at heart whether it is reading or writing. They need that sense of ownership and choice. And I really like the positive feedback/critiques they receive. There is no limit to their ability and no sense of boundaries set by a typical school setting. They can just be themselves.
