For my final text set, I chose to find resources on Tennessee. I feel it is important for students to know about the area in which they live.
Books
East Tennessee from A to Z by Jenna McMillan
Age Range: 6 and up
This children's book is written to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Children's Hospital. It is written by a 12 year old, Jenna McMillan and illustrated by the patients of the Children's Hospital.
Good Night Tennessee by Adam Gamble
Age Range: Any
This book features easy to read text and introduces the reader to Tennessee's main sights and attractions.
V is for Volunteer: A Tennessee Alphabet by Michael Shoulders
Age Range: 6 and up
This is a popular book that teaches the reader about Tennessee's history and also about familiar landmarks.
Tennessee Facts and Symbols by Kathy Feeney
Age Range: 6 to 8
This book offers 24 large pictures of Tennessee's state symbols and animals. Children really enjoy learning about nature and they will enjoy looking at the full color pictures and reading the large print of this book.
How to Draw Tennessee's Sights and Symbols by Melody Mis
Age Range: 9 and up
What a great way to incorporate art into the learning curriculum. Students will learn to draw the famous people and landmarks they are learning about.
Count on Us: A Tennessee Number Book by Michael Shoulders
Age Range: 6 and up
This is a great follow up to V is for Volunteer! Michael Shoulders has written this book to teach children about numbers while simultaneously teaching about Tennessee's flora and fauna.

ReplyDeleteWhat an awesome idea for a text set! I actually remember my 5th grade teacher reading the "V is for Volunteer" book aloud to our class. :) These all seem like great resources for teaching about the history and characteristics of our wonderful state. Great post!
